RoadShow Mobile Simulator Training

RoadShow Simulator Skills Experience

Mobile, simulator-based skill development, delivered on-site to support highway maintenance and road building operations across British Columbia.

Built on two years of province-wide outreach, the RoadShow is expanding to support practical, job-ready skill development through a flexible, mobile simulator experience designed for members.

Program overview

Beginning March 1, the RoadShow will transition from a fully grant-funded outreach initiative into a member-focused, simulator-based skills experience. This expansion is designed to support early onboarding, seasonal readiness, and equipment familiarization for highway maintenance and road building operations.

The program delivers on-site simulator experiences using a mobile trailer model, allowing firms to bring realistic equipment scenarios directly to their yards and service areas.

From outreach to industry support

Since launching in early 2024, the RoadShow has travelled across British Columbia introducing more than 20,000 people to careers in highway maintenance and road building. With strong member support, the program has successfully built awareness, interest, and entry into the industry.

As the outreach phase concludes on February 28, the RoadShow is intentionally evolving to meet the next need identified by members: practical, accessible skill development that supports operational readiness.

What the simulator experience includes

The RoadShow Simulator Skills Experience provides hands-on, scenario-based learning using advanced simulators designed to replicate real-world operating conditions.

The experience is intended to:

  • Support onboarding of auxiliary and seasonal staff

  • Provide exposure to equipment operation in a controlled environment

  • Reinforce safe operating practices and situational awareness

  • Complement existing internal training and supervision

This program is designed as a skills support and familiarization experience, not formal certification or competency assessment.

Equipment and simulator capabilities

The RoadShow operates two mobile simulator trailers.

Trailer One

One snowplow simulator
Three heavy equipment simulators

Trailer Two, purpose-built for highway maintenance

Two snowplow simulators
One advanced heavy equipment simulator with custom controls

The advanced simulator can support experience across the following equipment types:

Mobile delivery model

The simulator experience is delivered on-site using a mobile trailer model. This approach reduces travel time for staff, improves accessibility, and allows training support to be integrated into operational schedules.

Bookings include a training facilitator and are designed to scale from smaller groups to larger yard-based sessions.

The trailers may also be booked for outreach and industry attraction events.

Scheduling

Member feedback has consistently shown the highest demand occurs in the lead-up to winter operations. To address this, the RoadShow team is developing a provincial delivery approach that:

  • Starts earlier in northern and interior regions

  • Progresses south as the season advances

  • Rotates booking windows year over year where possible

Early input from members helps ensure scheduling is efficient, fair, and responsive to operational realities across the province.

Pricing

The program is designed on a cost-recovery model with the following principles:

  • Discounted rates for BCRB members

  • Weekly bookings encouraged, with one day effectively free when booking a full week

  • Travel costs apply

  • Annual sponsorship opportunities may bundle simulator hours, outreach events, and sponsor recognition
