Training

When people think of road building and heavy construction, jackhammers, picks and shovels usually come to mind. But there’s so much more to this industry. It is a highly sophisticated industry utilizing all sorts of specialized technology and equipment. Road builders are the men and women who opened up this country and who continue to make it possible for people and commerce to move freely and efficiently.

Today, road building is an “earn as you learn” industry – one of the very few well-paying careers where you don’t need a university education to get started. While you are employed, you will continually be upgrading your skills and earning potential. Demand for people is at an all-time high right now.

Our industry and association is investing in training and development because it needs labourers, heavy equipment operators, supervisors, and project managers. You can choose the occupation that’s right for you based on your personal level of education, experience, and preference. Currently, skilled workers in all parts of this sector are in high demand and this is expected to continue over the next decade – and well beyond.

Our industry offers a broad spectrum of challenging, satisfying, and financially rewarding careers. You can start with entry-level positions like labourers or equipment operators ($20 - $35/hour) and work up to senior supervisory positions in project management, consulting, and estimating. The opportunities are endless…

Another major bonus is mobility. Your skills can be used anywhere, so you’ll be able to find work throughout BC or wherever you choose to live. You’ll also share in the pride and satisfaction that comes from contributing to lasting and important community investments in highways, bridges, rapid transit, and other major infrastructure projects.
